synopsis

Twenty-five year old Kayden (Kay) Kampfield is a gifted assassin. Her Barbie-doll looks and emotionless approach prove to be abundantly successful in efficiently taking down any mark she chooses to take on. She is content in her uncomplicated life with her live-in boyfriend, Levi and her friend and roommate, Cady.

After the successful completion of her latest job, Cady helps – pushes – Levi to make the decision to move-out as the signs are all there. The time has come. After his amusing, yet cringe-worthy exit, Kay gives Cady the all clear and they wind down the night with a nice glass of wine. However, when Kay is woken in the middle of the night by a blinding light shining in her second floor window, she decides to confront the tail that’s been following her for months.

After following the man for a short distance, she finds him reporting to none other than her ex-boyfriend, Donovan. Who happens to be the one she can’t seem to shake completely out of her system. A tense and sexually charged confrontation ensues, leaving Kay irritated and stomping out with little more knowledge than she had before arriving.

When she returns home to find her apartment trashed and Cady missing, an ominous message on the wall makes her think of Donovan. Without thought, Kay calls and quickly accuses a very confused Donovan, who abruptly appears at the apartment to lend a hand.

While there, Donovan drops the bomb on Kay that she’s adopted, going as far as calling her mother on speaker-phone, though he makes no indication as to how he came by that knowledge and seems intent on keeping tight-lipped about it.

Kay goes to the one place she can think of to find help, the headquarters of the Company, where she gets her jobs. While there, she is surprised by the sudden re-appearance of Donovan, who ends up being the boss. They watch the scene play out in Kay’s apartment, recorded by cameras she wasn’t aware were present. The guys inform Kay of an insane woman named Carisova, whom they believe is behind Cady’s kidnapping. They tell her that Carisova is a Siren, though Kay isn’t buying their story.

When Kay gets home, she packs up everything she could need and heads out. She’s confronted by a sing-song, rhyming voice whose possessor she can’t find. The presence tells her where to find Cady and she proceeds to build a plan to extract her friend.

excerpt

After a few moments of awkward silence, I realize that Donovan is watching me. When I focus my attention on him, he makes a gesture as if to say I need to scoot back.

“I don’t think so, pal. I’m not riding bitch on my own damn bike. You’re crazy.” With that, I pat the seat behind me and grin.

He doesn’t say anything, just grimaces and throws his leg over the seat, propping his feet up on the pegs. The thought of a big muscular man like Donovan propped up behind a petite little blonde, riding a motorcycle is pretty fucking funny. Just so that I can clearly picture it, I pull forward, slowly, stopping just in front of the blacked-out glass doors. Yup, pretty fucking funny. My victorious smirk falls flat when his strong arms snake around my waist, resting his hands on the insides of my thighs and his breath fans across the back of my exposed neck.

“This works for me, too.” He says huskily.

As his words flutter over my skin, gooseflesh prickles along my neck and arms, despite the overbearing heat. Completely against my wishes, a shiver of pleasure shimmies down my spine, not stopping until it’s successfully titillated my over-eager girly parts. Fucking-A!

about the author

L.L. Ford is good at being different. With an unpredictable style that can’t fit into any one category, you might find her in anything from a pencil skirt combo while rocking some five inch stilettos, to a distressed pair Rockstar denim shorts, a vs PINK top and flip-flops… unless she’s working on the car or some other random project; then she’s likely donning some torn up jeans or sweats with a tank and her favorite Converse. Her hairstyle changes with the wind, having been every length and nearly every color under the sun (blue was fun).

A North Carolina native, Ford loves her truck, her guns and her good ol’ southern hospitality. She shares a house with her husband (the hunter), daughter (the cheerleader), son (the class-clown), a quirky little Yorkshire whose inexplicably terrified of her bedroom (and pees a little when she gets excited), a Czech shepherd that refuses to accept that he’s not supposed to groom the cats and a pair of lazy cats who just want to be left alone… unless, they’re getting groomed by the dog (which they love).

Ford is a fiercely loyal and selective friend; compulsively honest (bluntly so) and has been known to step on a toe a time or two when being subjected to nonsensical gossip about someone she’s opted to accept into her circle of protection. Everyone who knows her has come to accept that there shall be no conversation when Ford is reading (at least not two-sided). Her gift of completely zoning out everything and immersing herself into the world held within the pages is unparalleled. Oh, you can try to talk to her, but she won’t hear you. Her kids’ friends can’t decide between being afraid of her and her tattoos and loving her and her beefed up sound system.

Accepting her crazy, she comes to expect the oddities of her nature. So when she decided to hang up her accountant hat and become a writer, it wasn’t surprising at all. Now, if she could just find that motorcycle she’s been dreaming about.

This unrepentant contradiction loves reading as well as writing about independent, flawed women and sexy, capable men who don’t hide behind society’s standards.
